As summer comes to a close and the temps get a little cooler, it is the perfect opportunity to turn your deck into a beautiful outdoor space for entertaining, relaxing with friends or just enjoying a cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon. The key is to decorate with the same attention to detail, comfort and style as any other room in your house. First, ask yourself what you will use the space for most – dining under the stars, hosting Sunday brunch, or gathering around a fire pit to catch up with friends. It’s easier than ever to make the most of the season by giving your deck a facelift for fall without breaking the bank! Here’s how:
Start with comfortable furniture.
Cozy seating will keep your guests coming back for more! I’m a huge fan of Adirondack chairs. They’re classic and oversized so everyone can get comfy. And you won’t get any marks on the capped composite decking. Home Depot offers comfortable Adirondack chairs for $30 each. Even though you have to prime and paint them, you can’t beat the price and they make for easy conversation when arranged in a circle. Floor cushions, like these from Ikea, also provide extra seating in a pinch and add lots of natural texture.
Bring the indoors out.
Lighting is just as important outside as it is inside. String lights and lanterns set a festive scene and create a laid-back, elegant ambience. One of my favorite, inexpensive tricks is to set tea candles inside a bunch of mason jars and scatter them around my deck. A pack of twelve costs less than $10, but the visual impact is amazing!
