Deck Showcase: Apex Carpentry

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Each professional deck builder considers his completed projects to be works of art. Fiberon Professional Craig Brewster of Apex Carpentry shares one composite deck project that shows no matter how old you are, you can still be a kid at heart.

Fiberon composite deckingIn South Jordan, Utah, Apex Carpentry was asked to build a unique deck, which would accommodate not only the parents, but their son as well. Using Fiberon Horizon Ipe decking, Craig and his team added a slide as a special feature to allow the homeowners’ son hours of fun.

Before constructing this fun outdoor living space, the home had a small deck in the same place that was too small for the homeowners’ needs and was rotting.

Inside Fiberon: ClearVisionSystem

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Fiberon Decking Specialist Paul Penziol shares his experience with two homeowners from Oregon who were in the process of building not only their dream deck, but also their dream home.

ClearVisionSystem, Fiberon composite decking and railingIt all started with a phone call from a homeowner wanting more information about Fiberon Horizon Ipe decking. The “man of the house” was determined to do this project himself with the help from his brother who is a contractor. His wife loved the look of Horizon Ipe composite decking, as it gave them lasting beauty with low maintenance, with a natural wood look–after all, they live in Oregon. They invited me to their home and we sat out on the deck and as I recall, this is how the story started. They saved up to buy this hill top piece of property so they could build their lifelong dream home on it.

Next came the dream deck. The view was spectacular as it went on for miles and deserved an outdoor living space to enjoy it from. The treetops and valleys below where stunning and the longer I sat, the more beauty I took in. I remember talking about decking characteristics and installation, when the “true decision maker” spoke up about the railing. I believe her comment went something like, “There was only one choice of railing: Fiberon’s ClearVisionSystem.”

I had to agree with her that no other railing would work in this situation. She went on to explain that their next project would be a playground in front of the house and deck, and a grass yard below. She wanted to be able to see through the railing and keep an eye on their young kids. The invisible Plexiglas provides protection from wind and safety for the children, as it wouldn’t distort that view they saved so hard for. The husband did find it a somewhat challenging project, but loved the fact that he was able to cut the clear panels on site. The hidden fastening system was easy to install and brought out even more aesthetic beauty. Fiberon’s ClearVisionSystem compliments the Fiberon Horizon Ipe decking in the same way the home and property reflected the beautiful people that lived there. It was a pleasure to meet these folks. Thanks for inviting me to your home.

Unique Deck Requests

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

With custom composite decks as their specialty, Breyer Construction & Landscape LLC has provided homeowners with beautiful results. Matt Breyer, President of Breyer Construction & Landscape LLC, shares his most unique deck requests from customers.

As a deck designer, I have the unique opportunity to meet with 300 – 400 folks each year who are at some stage of “thinking about” a new deck or repairing/replacing their current deck. Along the course of these encounters, I have had some questions or requests that the client felt was unique… and there have been some requests that I as a contractor felt were a bit out of the ordinary.

composite deck designFortunately, working with people to design and build “the fun rooms” of the house allows us to creatively work together to answer their questions and satisfy their requests. Keep in mind when working with a qualified deck designer or builder; this is what they do this for a living so there is a good chance that they can address your unique request. For us, we have found that the requests break down into two separate areas: project requests and business requests.

A project request often asks to mix and match different manufacturers of decking and railing, or even using several manufacturers of various components to create a custom deck that isn’t otherwise available on the marketplace.

It may even take finding a manufacturer that is willing to create a custom item to satisfy specific design criteria. Sometimes however, it’s using traditional manufactured products to create a more unique or personalized space, such as a pergola, roof, or gazebo to define a specific area, for example. (more…)

Horizon or Outdoor Flooring? Experts Compare Fiberon Products

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Our expert, Bob King, provides a unique look inside Fiberon’s PVC and composite decking products. Consumers can stay ahead of the curve with the latest industry innovations in composite decking.

Composite decking emerged in the early 90′s as an answer to demands to make a decking product that performed better and needed less maintenance than regular wood decking. Cupping, twisting and rotting wood that gave your kids splinters and required constant refinishing was the norm. Innovation was needed.

Composite decking provided solutions for the need to stain or paint, splinters, twisting and rotting boards. But, soon consumers were demanding a more realistic wood look and products that were easy to clean.

Fiberon has been burning the midnight oil for years to make decking products that meet these homeowners’ expectations. (more…)
