Q: Who is Fiberon?

A: Founded in 1997, Fiberon is a leading U.S. manufacturer of wood-alternative decking, railing, fencing, and cladding distributed worldwide. In addition, Fiberon products are sold through some of the largest, most well-respected retailers in the industry, including 84 Lumber®, BMC®, Builders FirstSource®, Home Depot® and Lowes®. We manufacture an array of product styles and colors, each offering the look of natural wood without the expensive, time-consuming maintenance. Fiberon products are free of toxic chemicals and contain up to 94% recycled content. Recognized as a “2015 Eco-leader” by Green Builder magazine, Fiberon maintains operations in our home state of North Carolina and in Idaho.

Q: What is Fiberon's expertise in composite cladding?

A: Fiberon has worked to advance the appearance and performance of composite building materials without sacrificing our commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly manufacturing. We have led the way with innovative solutions that have become industry standards:

  • First molded and embossed solid, reversible wood-plastic composite (WPC) decking 1999
  • First WPC decking with comprehensive spectrum of performance additives 2004
  • First reversible, capped composite decking with multi-chromatic technology (Horizon) 2008
  • First stain and fade warranty on capped composites 2009
  • First cellular foam PVC decking with tropical, multi-chromatic technology 2013
  • First composite cladding warranted for rainscreen applications (Horizon and Symmetry) 2015

With its roots in decking applications, our composite cladding provides a level of durability, longevity, and resistance to cracking, peeling, and fading that other common cladding materials simply can’t match. Plus, Fiberon composite cladding never needs staining, sealing, re-painting, or refinishing, which significantly reduces long-term costs of ownership.

Q: What is a rainscreen system?

A: Read our detailed article: Rainscreens and moisture management- what you need to know.

Q: Does Fiberon provide a complete rainscreen system solution?

A: Fiberon offers a durable composite cladding that provides an elegant wood-like façade for a rainscreen system. At this time, Fiberon offers the cladding component only. Other elements include: weather-resistive barrier (rated for continuous UV exposure), furring material, and flashing at all penetration points and cladding transitions. See a list of rainscreen component manufacturers.

Q: Where can I buy Fiberon cladding?

A: Like all Fiberon products, the cladding is in stock and available through a wide network (@ 2200) of lumberyards and building material distributors and dealers, including Home Depot®. Locate the Fiberon dealer nearest to you: “Where to Buy”.

Q: Why would I choose a decking product for an architectural cladding or screening application?

A: Fiberon composite boards have been tested and trusted by contractors for years. They have been designed and manufactured to withstand the rigors of regular foot traffic without sacrificing appearance or performance, so you can feel confident when specifying them for cladding projects.

Plus, unlike ordinary cladding options, Fiberon composite cladding won’t peel, split, crack, or rot. It’s dimensionally stable, easy to install, and deflects only negligible amounts of water – unlike brick or stucco, which absorb water quite readily.

Q: What testing has Fiberon cladding passed?

A: Fiber Composites, LLC (dba Fiberon) is the first leading wood-alternative decking manufacturer to be issued both a Florida Product Approval number (#21959) and a Texas Department of Insurance Product Evaluation (TDI MC-18) for use of its products in rainscreen cladding applications. See all testing evaluations below:

  • Performance Evaluation Report PER-17111
  • Florida Product Approval Number #21959
  • Meets Florida Building Code Test protocols for High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ)
    • TAS 201-94 Large and small missile test standard: Design Pressure +120.0/-120.0 psf
    • TAS 202-94 Uniform structural load standard: Design Pressure +120.0/-120.0 psf
    • TAS 203-94 Uniform cyclic pressure test standard: Design Pressure +120.0/-120.0 psf
  • Texas Department of Insurance Product Evaluation (TDI-MC-18)
  • NFPA 268 Standard Test Method for Determining Ignitability of Exterior Wall Assemblies Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source (PASSED)

In TAS tests, Fiberon Composite Cladding surpassed capabilities of fiber cement and engineered wood claddings.

Set by the state of Florida for all construction trades. Products with this designation have been approved for use throughout Florida, including in Hurricane Zones. Specifiers should request the Product Approval page as evidence of approval. Once a product has been awarded a Florida product approval number, no state building commission can require additional testing, evaluation, or documentation. Approval means our product has been evaluated for compliance with the wind loads specified in the International Residential Code (IRC) and the International Building Code (IBC). To learn more, visit

NFPA 268 Standard Test Method for Determining Ignitability of Exterior Wall Assemblies Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source. Used for code and other regulatory purposes, specification and design purposes, and research and development activities. Conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, this is a testing methodology to measure and describe the ignitability characteristics of exterior wall assemblies and their potential of contributing to fire growth. Fiberon cladding products meet the standard.

Q: How is Fiberon Cladding installed?

A: Generally speaking, Fiberon cladding can be installed by workers on ladders. In most cases, there’s no need for scaffolding or other special arrangements. You can secure the planks using composite deck screws or Cortex hidden face-fastening screws with color-matched plugs for a more upscale, flawless appearance. The cladding boards can be installed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, and are also reversible. See installation instructions.

Q: What are the differences between Symmetry and Horizon cladding?

A: Both collections feature the same durable composite construction and proprietary PermaTech cap layer for stain and fade; however, each product line has its own distinct look.

Symmetry has a matte finish and subtle multi-tonal streaking. Offered in four earthy colors (Burnt Umber, Cinnabar, Graphite, and Warm Sienna), Symmetry delivers a rich, understated look.

Horizon has a more traditional satin finish and dramatic multi-tonal streaking. Choose from Ipe, Castle Gray, Rosewood, and Tudor Brown.

Q: Is cladding a new product for Fiberon?

A: No, cladding is a new application for our Symmetry and Horizon decking products, both recognized for their wood-like aesthetics, lasting durability, and easy maintenance. Fiberon cladding gives architects and specifiers a beautiful, long-lasting design option that never needs re-painting, re-staining, or re-finishing – and that can mean significant savings on long-term maintenance costs.

Q: What type of weather barrier should I use?

A: Fiberon recommends installing a highly UV-resistant rainscreen weather barrier with Fiberon Cladding. Note that the air gap between the weather-resistive barrier and exterior cladding can be as narrow as 3/8”. This will still enable drainage and drying.

Q: How can architectural firms or commercial developers obtain Fiberon composite cladding samples?

A: Simply complete this request form to receive a cladding kit, or a specific color board.

Q: I'd like information about FIBERON COMPOSITE DECKING. Where can I learn more?

A: Visit the products section for information on all of the products offered by Fiberon, including composite and PVC decking and fasteners, composite railing and fencing, as well as composite cladding.
